Strip Curtains: Determining Where

Cooler and freezer strip curtains can be mounted on the wall or within the door jamb itself. Certain considerations should be thought through when looking into where your strip curtains should be mounted (like obstructions).

Hinged Parts universal mounting hardware can be used in both jamb mounting applications as well as wall mounting applications (depending on which way you place the screw wholes).

Wall Mount.

On a wall mount application, the strip curtain hangs above the jamb on the wall itself and overlaps the opening on

both sides as well as above the door. This mounting type has extra coverage creating a stronger barrier keeping additional warm air out. This is the best mounting option when taking energy efficiency into consideration or if the curtain will be accompanied by another door like a cooler or freezer.

Exact dimensions of the opening are not generally needed for this mounting application. When considering a strip curtain kit for a wall mount application roughly 4″ are added to the width dimensions (2″ per side) and 6″-10″ to the height (depending n how high you are planning on mounting the curtain). Ex. A standard wall mount curtain kit is 40″ x 84″. This is perfect for an opening that is 36″ x 70+ (since the strips themselves are trim-able).

In a jamb mount the mounting hardware is installed in the top part of the door jamb. The curtains hang directly within the door opening and do not overlap on the side walls or top.

Exact dimensions of the door opening is crucial for this application. The jamb mount application is usually utilized in warehouses, loading docks, or when there is an obstruction such as lights or other hardware and the wall mount is not able to be used.

Controlling Your Costs & Increasing ROI

Fixed costs in a business are usually just that…fixed. They cannot be changed, they are always there, and for the most part, consistent. But, what if there was a way to change that…A way to improve upon your fixed costs and make them less? Why spend more when you can spend less in the long run? What would it take? Let’s think efficiency.

Commercial refrigeration is one of the most energy consuming areas in the foodservice industry. C-stores and restaurants alike are starting to entertain ways to reduce energy costs by focusing on everything from periodic maintenance to retrofits/upgrades, and even refrigerated case placement throughout the store. Making Improvements in efficiency can reduce your utility bill. Those extra savings go directly back into your business. Simple, right?

What areas are being improved upon?

  • LED Case lighting:
    • Saves energy
    • Runs cooler to operate (doesn’t give off much its own heat)
      –  The freezer doesn’t have to work as hard to offset the heat the light is producing
    • More consistent light showcasing products better
  • Anti-Sweat Heaters:
    – Put on a scheduled program (eliminates the need for continuous runtime)
  • Motion Sensors:
    -Inside walk-in coolers and freezers
    -Inside refrigerated display cases
  • Periodic Maintenance:
    – One of the first lines of defense when it comes to efficiency and refrigeration
    – Maintain gasket door seals
    – Clean motors that drive HVAC
-Make sure all hardware is closing properly (eliminate the heat that is coming into the freezer/cooler)
    -Door closers, Hinges, Latches
  • Look To Your Windows:
    – Coolers with glass facing west are going to have to work harder to stay cool
    – Solar film can be added to windows to shade the sun and assist energy efficiency
  • Cooler/Freezer Strip Curtains:
    – Adding Refrigerated case curtains saves energy without using any
    – Keeps warm air out of refrigerated spaces during periods of time when the freezer/cooler doors are left open

Smooth VS Ribbed

Do you know what should go on your walk-in refrigeration units? All types of strip curtains serve a specific purpose. Adding ribbed curtains when not needed won’t cause harm to your refrigeration units, but you may not want to spend the extra dollars if they are not necessary.

2 Questions should be asked:

  1. What type of traffic is going through the doors?
    – Forklifts and Machine traffic should used ribbed curtain material
-Foot traffic should use smooth strip curtain material
  2. Do the strip curtains need to be cleaned on a regular basis?
-If yes then smooth strip curtain material would be the better choice because of its flat profile

Smooth Strip Curtain Properties:

  • Flat Surface
  • Crystal Clear – offering very good visibility
  • Ideal for Pedestrian Applications
  • Easy to Clean
  • Commonly Used for Foodservice or More Technical Applications

Ribbed Strip Curtain Properties:

  • Ribbed Profile
  • Good for Heavy Traffic Applications
  • Ribs Work Like Bumpers – Protect from heavy loads
  • Ideal for Forklifts or Other Machinery Going In & Out
  • Ribbed Strip Curtain Material Needs to Be Replaced When Scratches Effect Visibility – When safety starts to be of a concern

Gear Up For Summer

Anti-Insect PVC Strips protect against ZIKA Virus

Many Companies (including restaurants, hotels, farms, refrigerated warehouses, food manufacturing facilities, etc.) are using Hinged Parts Anti-Insect Yellow PVC Strips to repel mosquitoes away from the door opening and prevent insects from entering their facility.  This exclusive product contains Citronella, a naturally occurring oil found in lemongrass, which gives off a specific smell that mosquitoes (and other flying insects) hate.  Mosquitoes will not land on the curtain due to the scent.  Also, the yellow color inhibits the insect’s ability to detect light, preventing the attraction that usually occurs after dark.  To a mosquito, this shade of yellow is opaque.

As the ZIKA virus spreads into the United States, it will be more critical than ever to protect employees and customers from mosquitoes in companies across all industry sectors. Our Anti-Insect Yellow PVC Strips provide an extra layer of security at the back door to keep mosquitoes out of the facility.

Is Your Temperature Rising …or Falling For that Matter?

Replace Your Cold Control

If your refrigerator is freezing food or is not cold enough, you may need to replace the cold control thermostat. The temperature controller on a commercial refrigerator or freezer is a vital component to maintaining food-safe holding temperatures. If it begins to malfunction, finding the right replacement quickly is of utmost importance.

Thermostats are typically found inside the refrigerator and have a knob that allows users to adjust the temperature setting. Once a user sets the desired temperature, the thermostat maintains that temperature by controlling the flow of electricity to the compressor. If the thermostat is the brain, the compressor is the heart of the operation, responsible for pumping the refrigerant through the coils.

There are two types of temperature controls used in commercial refrigeration:
1. Thermostatic (either an air sensing type or evaporator coil sensing type)
2. Low pressure control

So what happens when these are not functioning properly?

A commercial refrigeration thermostat can fail in two ways: in an open position or a closed position.

If the thermostat fails in the open position, the unit will not run at all. To check this, remove the screws from the evaporator housing (make sure the unit is unplugged or the breaker is off) and pull the housing down. Locate the wires attached to the thermostat and remove them. Connect the two wires together and tape with electrical tape. Turn on the breaker or plug the unit back in. If the unit runs, replace the thermostat.

If the thermostat fails in the closed position, the unit will run all the time. Running constantly will cause the evaporator to freeze up, restricting the airflow and causing the temperature to rise. Use the same procedure described above to test the unit and replace the thermostat if necessary. Also be sure to defrost the evaporator before turning the unit back on.
